Research in Pascal Barla's INRIA team focuses on the modelling of interactions between lighting, shape and materials for Computer Graphics. It involves the acquisition of real-world objects and material properties, the analysis of 3D shape at multiple scales, the rendering (photorealistic and stylized) of 3D objects with complex illumination, and the design of lighting environments that best depict shape and material properties. Other research topics include image and video analysis techniques that strive to decompose them into meaningful elements, and 2D pixel and vector-based drawing tools that mimic the appearance of 3D worlds. The research group uses a combination of optics (ray tracing and material properties), mathematics (differential geometry and fitting techniques), and perceptually-inspired concepts, and makes a heavy use of modern graphics hardware for real-time processing and rendering.
